L&T’s HOUSE RENOVATION
Renovation & extension of a three-sided house
This project concerns the renovation and extension of a three-facade 1960s house located in a quiet clos in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Brussels.
The intervention updates the existing bel-étage structure to meet the needs of a family of four, while reinforcing the relationship between the living spaces and the large rear garden.
A new rear extension aligns the house with its neighbour and enlarges the living floor. The kitchen and dining area now open directly onto a terrace overlooking the garden, bringing more natural light and clarity to the layout. The upper levels are reorganised to accommodate two children’s rooms, a study and a bathroom, while the attic is transformed into a complete master suite. A new dormer on the street side improves the quality of the attic space and integrates discreetly into the roofscape.
The renovation adopts a restrained architectural language. The façades are insulated and finished with light terracotta brick, consistent with the tones found in the clos. The new openings use grey aluminium frames, and the dormer is clad in dark thermo-treated wood. The rear volume is deliberately set back from the side façade to reduce its perceived mass from the garden.
The landscaping restores permeability at the front of the plot and reorganises access through a gravel driveway and planted areas. At the back, the terrace follows the natural slope and is bordered by local vegetation.
The project targets a PEB A performance level through improved insulation, a heat pump, double-flow ventilation and photovoltaic panels integrated into the roof. Rainwater is collected in a 10 m³ tank for reuse.
The result is a coherent and restrained transformation that preserves the spirit of the clos while offering a contemporary, efficient and adaptable home.
